Virginia Music Adventures' Chapel Square Combo is an advanced, elite, performance oriented group which performs all styles of jazz. Band members are age 14 – 18 and demonstrate a facility for playing their individual instrument at an advanced level. Instruction focuses heavily on developing and refining improvisation techniques.
This is accomplished through regular instruction in basic harmony & theory, chord structures & voicings, and composition & arranging. Students have an opportunity to hear original compositions read and critiqued. The group collectively arranges and creates settings of pieces for performances. Combo members improvise on a daily basis, and enjoy playing side by side with accomplished professional musicians who sit in while performing in our area. The Chapel Square Combo performs both locally and on domestic and international tours, and maintains an aggressive performance schedule performing at least once a month.
With 30 years of experience offering unique, performance based instruction, the VMA staff is well regarded, credentialed, and recognized. Guest clinicians from the local professional musical community contribute their expertise in master classes and sectional rehearsals regularly throughout the course of the program.
The Chapel Square Combo rehearses from October until May on Friday afternoons, 4:00 - 6:00 pm during the school year at the Little River United Church of Christ, 8410 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA 22003.
Positions in the Chapel Square Combo are gained through a competitive audition process. Preference is given to returning band members.
